Yoga Nidra is a state in which the body completely relaxes through guidance, much like a guided meditation. It is among the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness. By bringing your attention to the physical sensations in the body, you become accustomed to them, which allows you to forget the sensation altogether. This release of the outside world allows you to tune your awareness inward. This method of relaxation is said to be equivalent to two hours of sleep and can help release anxiety, stress, and even lower your blood pressure.
In our practice, we will begin with a physical body scan, starting from the feet and moving all the way up to the crown of the head. After the physical body is complete and you are deeply relaxed, we will move our awareness inward, focusing on our energetic body system, also known as our chakras. We’ll explain and scan each chakra, balancing each one and focusing on intentions to bring total energetic balance back into the body, mind and soul. This meditation will also be accompanied by the sound of a steel tongue drum. The use of props will be encouraged as we want to be as relaxed and comfortable as possible. This class is for all levels, and is suitable for beginners. You may want to bring a journal to record any insights that flow through to you during class.
