Teacher of the Week: Agalya Subramanian
Say hello to Agalya Subramanian!
About Agalya: My top interest in life is choosing to be happy and making others happy. I love my life and every day that I can open my eyes is a blessing. I was born and raised in India, a place with a diverse culture. I wanted to represent something about our heritage and that's when I came to know about BollyX-Bollywood dance workout. I decided to get certified to teach it!
Classes she teaches at Grace Tree: Wednesday: BollyX Bollywood Dance Workout
9:00 am - 10:00 am. BollyX is a Bollywood-inspired dance-fitness program that combines dynamic choreography with the hottest music from around the world. Its 50-minute cardio workout cycles between higher and lower-intensity dance sequences to get you moving, sweating, and smiling. At the very core of a BollyX workout is the inspiration it draws from the music and dance of Bollywood, the film industry of India. We embody the infectious energy, expression and movement of Bollywood and aim to expand the reach of fitness to more people worldwide.
How did you discover dance? Since I was a child, I had always been involved in and participated in a variety of dance competitions and shows. My dance background started at a young age and I fell in love with it a soon as I was introduced. I believe the quote that "Dance is a hidden language of the soul of the body." When I dance, I love myself and I feel happy. I let everything go and I have inner peace and satisfaction.
Why is dance such an important part of your life? I’ll dance all the time if it will help make the earth a better place. I will dance when I'm happy, I will dance when I'm sad, I will dance when I'm bored. It's the only way I can express myself. It helps me to relieve and rejuvenate!
Why did you decide to become a teacher? I love the instructors I worked with in the past. The energy they produced during the class was amazing. I believe I got the same energy and enthusiasm and I wanted to spread that around and make people happy.
Who inspires you most? ME. I'm my inspiration and I'm proud of myself. I feel blessed to have such a family who supports me in everything I do.
When I’m not teaching, you can find me (doing/hobbies, etc): Performing shows in cultural associations and doing art projects with my 5 year old daughter, cooking different cuisines and watching tv.
If I could spend an evening with any influential person in history (living or deceased, fictional or nonfictional), I would choose and this is why: Ellen Degeneres. I adore her and her shows. I admire her because she loves to dance and spread happiness. I'm so humbled by seeing her doing good deeds, she is hilarious and I would always get happy tears (never fails) when I watch her shows. And I love what she says every time when she finishes her shows. "Be kind to one another!"
